SUMMER SCHOOL OPTIONS AND PROCEDURES FOR 2011
Below are the different options for summer school during the summer of 2011. This information is an accounting of the options; the students who would be best served by each option; and how to enroll in each of them. Students may only enroll in one of these options.
CUSD Summer School @ Tesoro HS - CUSD run summer school taught by CUSD teachers
When: June 27th– July 29th: Monday through Friday 7:30am to 12:45pm
Eligibility: Current CUSD high school students who earned a D or F in Biology or CCP
Drivers Education Classes: Session I starts June 27th; Session II starts July 6th
Cost: No cost to students
Max Credits: 10

Pacific Coast High School Summer School – Online county run high school with college prep curriculum
When: July 1st– August 12th: Course done online at home
Eligibility: Current CUSD high school students who earned a D or F in the following courses: Health, English, U.S. History, World History, Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Pre-Calculus
Cost: No cost to students
Max Credits: 10

ACCESS – Independent study county run high school w/ non college prep curriculum
When: July 1 – August 26: Course done at home, meet once a week with teacher
Eligibility: Current CUSD high school students who earned an F in English, history, science, math, or an elective. All ACCESS courses are non college prep and only give graduation credit.
Cost: No cost to students
Max Credits:10 credits + 5 vocational ed. w/ a job. 5 credits max. w/ math class

Print and complete part 1 of the ACCESS application. Turn in forms to high school academic advisors for approval and submission. Print, read, and complete part 2 of the ACCESS application. Call ACCESS for an enrollment appointment. You will turn in the enrollment packet at ACCESS during your enrollment appointment.
Students may enroll in one of the programs below in conjunction with one of the above programs.
Adult Ed./Learning Center – Independent study done on-site at the CUSD Adult Education Center in San Juan Capistrano
When: TBD
Eligibility: Students who have earned an F in English, history, science or an elective and are currently enrolled in CUSD, PCHS, or ACCESS summer school for the first 10 credits of remediation. This option is a way to maximize credit recovery and allow students to “catch up”. These courses are non-college prep and only provide graduation credit.
Cost: No cost to students
Max Credits: Unlimited
How to Apply: Get applications from high school academic advisor and turn in to high school academic advisor.
Adult and Community Education Center – Online community education
When: TBD
Eligibility: Students wishing to enroll in fee-based programs for athletics, mathematics, test preparation, and other personal enrichment opportunities. These classes are for personal enrichment and skill improvement.
Cost: Determined by course taken.
Max Credits: 5

Regional Occupational Program
When: TBD
Eligibility: Students in high school who are at least 16 years old or have attained junior standing who would like to gain elective credit.
Cost: Check with ROP Career Guidance Specialist
How to Apply: Register for classes through Career Guidance Specialist at the high school ROP Career Center.
Community College and Online University Courses
When: TBD
Eligibility: Students entering grades 9-12 who need to make up a D or F grade in a course or who need to complete credits toward graduation and who do not have room in their schedules to complete coursework during the regular school year.
Cost: Determined by course taken.
Max credits: 10
How to Apply: See high school academic advisor. Courses must be pre-approved; credit will not be granted if the course is not pre-approved. An official transcript must be given to the academic advisor to receive credit.
General Information
The high school summer program emphasizes academic preparation for those students who are not achieving at an appropriate level and/or still need to pass the California High School Exit Exam. For more information, contact your child’s teacher or academic advisor at the high school
Summer School program for all Capistrano Unified School District students’ entering grades 10-12. Students are eligible to attend this remedial program if they are:
- Making up credits needed for high school graduation
- Repeating a course in order to make up a failing grade (F) or improving a low grade (D)
- Improving basic skills to pass the California High School Exit Exam
Courses will be offered contingent upon sufficient enrollment. Due to funding and staffing limitations, it may not be possible to accommodate every student who applies for Summer School. Waiting lists will be established for Summer School as necessary. http://www.capousd.org/summer/
REGISTRATION
Registration forms will be available in the Guidance Office in Spring 2010.
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance throughout the 24-day session is mandatory. In order to earn credit, students may not have more than ONE absence per each twelve-day semester. Students will be dropped from the class on the second absence within twelve days.
OTHER SUMMER SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
ADULT EDUCATION: High school students, who are fully enrolled in the high school summer program and are at least 16 years of age, may enroll in the Capistrano Adult School Learning Center program to retake classes previously failed. The Learning Center mirrors the traditional high school summer calendar, with sites and times to be determined in May. Students must obtain a referral and a summer school schedule from their “home” high school prior to enrollment in the Adult School program.
