SJHHS Attendance Procedures

It is our desire at San Juan Hills High School that students attend classes regularly and have a successful year. To that end, it will be helpful for each family to maintain regular communication with the Attendance Office staff. Whenever your son or daughter is absent, please call our absence line at (949) 234-5592; this service is available 24 hours a day. When calling the message line, please speak slowly and clearly, and spell the full name and grade of your child. Also, please leave one of the reasons for the absence listed below:

  • Illness: (Code I)
  • Medical Appointments (Code L)
  • Funerals (Code F)
  • Court Appearance, Religious Retreat, College Visit (Code L)
  • Religious Holiday (Code K)
  • Personal Business (Code U) Any absence not listed above. For example, a non-medical appointment, vacation, oversleeping, traffic, etc. Generally, these types of absences are considered unexcused and it is up to the discretion of the teachers to allow make up work.
  • Independent Study (Code M)
  • Office, Nurse, Guidance (Code O)
  • Verifed School Function (Code V) Sports, Field Trips

Tardies Students who arrive late to class create not only a disruption to the classroom, but also a disruption and loss of valuable instructional time for the student.  All students arriving after the 1st bell must report to the Attendance Office and sign in -  even if arriving between passing period - NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!

Leaving School Early It is sometimes necessary for the student to leave before the school day is over. In this case, a parent/guardian must contact the Attendance Office prior to the student leaving campus. The Attendance Office will issue the student a prearranged “early out” slip which will be presented to the teacher for the students release from class. The student must then report to the Attendance Office for parent/guardian pick up or sign out as a Student Driver if the parent has indicated such. Students who leave campus without permission are considered truant and parents are unable to clear the truancy. Due to time constraints, the Attendance Office staff may not be able to assist with parent requests for a student to leave campus early within the last 20 minutes of the school day. Please refrain from making requests during this time period.  All students must be signed out in the Attendance Office when leaving school early - NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!

Truancies Any unverified absence that is not cleared with the Attendance office within 72 hours (Ed. Code) will become a truancy and disciplinary action may be taken... Students are expected to be responsible for their attendance record. The school suggests the following: check with teachers (especially on sub days) to verify roll, respond immediately when the automated absence system calls home, and periodically verify your students attendance by checking School Loop!   Please ensure the Attendance Office has up-to-date phone and/or email information so that we can communicate all absences in a timely manner.

Delivering messages or personal items

To maintain a learning environment that is uninterrupted, the Attendance Office does not deliver items or messages to students. Students are responsible for bringing everything with them at the start of the day. This includes homework, study materials, uniforms/sports equipment, and lunches. We appreciate your understanding that valuable instructional time should not be interrupted.
